Hand saws are designed for converting logs, solid wood or man-made boards
into smaller components with a little bit of human energy.
A handsaw's pointed teeth act like miniature chisels or knife blades, removing minute shavings or slivers of wood, leaving a slot or "kerf" slightly wider than the thickness of the saw blade.
The very best hand saw is designed for a particular job since no one tool can include contradictory features.
Large, widely separated teeth bent significantly away from the body of the blade (high "set") will create a wide cut line to prevent binding, where speed is important but accuracy is not.
Some hand saws are built with fine tight teeth that are razor sharp with almost NO set, to create cuts of great accuracy as with a picture frame handsaw that slides between preset guides.
Some saws need to track along a precise line like some of the very best Japanese hand saws that are built to create intricate dovetail fingers and interlocking wood joinery and use a "pull" technique instead of the traditional push to allow for finer sharper blades.
Using one saw for everything is kind of like using the kitchen tongs for scooping up the spagetti, opening a jar and roasting the weiners... I won't say you can't do it, but having the right tool for the job does make it easier.
Matching the features to the application makes woodworking easier. Learn what characteristics to look for. Understand how the saw will be used and this will help in selecting the best hand saw for YOU .. It may NOT be the best hand saw for ME, but then that doesn't really matter, does it? I still use the tongs to serve my spaghetti!
