DEWALT DW788 SCROLLSAW

Dewalt has made a number of scrollsaws over the years but the DW788 scrollsaw is their newest model. It represents a shift in design for less vibration and quieter operation with more convenient positioning of the on/off switch and blade tensioning lever.

Have a look here for the list of features and if you need the parts manual or operation instructions I have added a link at the bottom so that you can find it easily on the Dewalt website.

Feature List:

  • Dewalt used their innovative double parallel - link arm design on their Dw788 Scrollsaw. The parallel arms move left and right and only the triangular cams at the end of each parallel arm swivels up and down to create the appropriate vertical motion for the scroll saw blade. This design creates less vibration and noise.
  • Electronic Variable speed, but doesn't have any indicators so that you know what speed you are running at.. need to improvise to create a scale
  • 1.3 amp motor with on/off switch mounted on the top of the upper arm, easy to reach, and out of range for any small children that may visit your shop.
  • 400- 1750 Strokes per Minute
  • 3/4" stroke
  • 2" depth of cut
  • 20" scroll saw throat depth
  • flexible metal dust tube, that can be positioned to an appropriate position and stay put
  • Cast iron Table that rotate 45 degrees in both directions
  • Upper arm lifts to aid in blade insertion
  • 56 lbs
  • footprint for the scroll saw: 25" x 11" with a few extra inches necessary for the table
  • teardrop shaped table top that is approximately 24" long and 16" wide
  • Warranty: 1 year free Service, 3 year limited warranty

Accessories Available

  • Stand: the dw788 scroll saw can be ordered with an all metal three leg stand
  • Light: attaches to the left side of the arm, but at only 25 watts you won't be lighting up too much
  • Foot Pedal: is NOT available for this unit

If you are pricing the Dewalt DW788 scrollsaw online, note that the DW7880 refers to JUST the scroll saw stand and the DW7881 is the product code for their proprietary lamp.

The most impressive feature of this 20" dewalt scroll saw is the noise level ratings it achieved during a performance test by popular mechanics. They offered a scroll saw review in their December 2002 magazine and listed the sound level under high and low load as between 45 and 56 dBA. That's about 10 dBA lower than most scrollsaws in its class.

I guess it adds some credence to their comments that the new 2 arm parallel link system not only reduces the vibration on Dewalt DW788 Scrollsaw, but also makes for a much quieter operation. Something that we should all be more aware of in choosing woodworking tools.
